Historical background ...

In the 17th and 18th century the Franceschini family is one of the most influential families of the Balagne region.
The 1701-family mansion located in the village of Pigna depicts the Franceschini’s long lost power.

The family’s leadership period takes place between the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 19th century.
During this time Francesco is the head of the family. This ancestor is said to have arrived along with Guido Savelli and his knights.

The Franceschini “podente di robba e di personne” through their established trade enjoy economic, political and moral power.
Their leadership as landowners is ascertained at the beginning of the 19th century (they used to own 150 hectares of land).
The main traded products of Balagne are cultivated on their land.
Moreover the family owns the machines that transform crops into traded products – this is a sign of wealth- two mills (in Pigna and Muro) and a magnificent garden “u giardinu” which was rewarded Pépinière Royale in 1830 by the Duke of Orleans.

From the second half of the 19th century the family decline was to be accentuated by the industrial revolution.
